Alma 29:9,10
I know that which the Lord hath cammanded me, and I glory in it. I do not glory of myself, but I glory in that which the Lord hath commanded me; yea, and this is my glory, that perhaps I may be an instrument in the hands of God to bring some soul to repentance; and this is my joy.

And behold, when I see many of my brethren truly penitent, and coming to the Lord their God, then is my soul filled with joy; then do I remember what the Lord has done for me, yea even that he hath heard my prayer; yea, then do I remember his merciful arm which he extended towards me.

Happy Birthday Elder

The past couple of weeks have been an emotional journey for me. I try to focus on the blessing it is to have a missionary in the field. It is far more painful to not have your son serve or to have him return home prior to when he should. I would not want Elder Winters anywhere else at this time so these feelings were confusing to me.

One day as I seemed particularly vulnerable to what I was feeling I was able to reach out to a beautiful sister in Utah that had previously contacted me offering to help me do something special for our son. I mentioned that it would be wonderful to have Elder Winters receive an ice cream cake for his birthday. She was so sweet and kind and despite a Stake Auxiliary Training Meeting she was planning for made sure that our missionary had the cake on his birthday. She sent an email that day telling me that she had decorated his door and offering to give him an extra email message if we wanted to send one. I was able to copy and paste all of the greetings that friends and family had sent for him and send it along. Having an angel with willing hands on the Utah end of things really helped to brighten this day. There was some disagreement on this communication but I feel good about what has happened and have no regret. Thank you to Sister Hendershot for her kindness, love and service.

As I pondered his birthday I realized this was the first birthday for any of my children that I had not physically spoken to them. It is a strange feeling. I felt a need to feel close to him even though he was not here. His days are filled with spiritual light so it seemed the way to be closest to him was to go to the temple. As I approached the doors there were missionaries sitting outside. I took a moment and went to them and thanked them for the service and sacrifice they were making. Inside the temple were countless other missionaries. It was a tender mercy to be surrounded by all of these valiant young men and women. I thank my Father in Heaven for helping me feel close to my son on his birthday

Utah Provo Mission Map
From Wyomings boarder to the four corners and into Colorado and Arizona there is work to do.

A little history of the UTAH, PROVO MISSION

In the late 1970's there was only one mission in Utah. As the work grew the mission was divided into areas to cover the North and South of the state. On January 1, 1989 the Utah, Provo mission was formed from a division of the Salt Lake City North and South missions. President Magnusson was called to open the mission. Today President Neil Pitts serves as President.

The area the mission currently covers was for the most part in the former Utah, Salt Lake City South Mission. During the time President Humphreys lead the mission, it was expanded to include Blanding, Monticello and Montezuma Creek. At this point the mission area took in all of Utah south of the Uintah Mountians.

With the creation of the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission the northern area of the mission was altered slightly. In addition Panaca and Mesquite Nevada were moved to the Nevada, Las Vegas Mission.

On July 1, 2010 the Utah Provo Mission was divided again. In this split the Utah, St George Mission was created. There are a large number on non-members that live in the St. George area and more are moving in. As you can see from the map below the Utah, Provo Mission will cover a realtively small area but there will still be much work to do.
